How to Replace an Audi key blade G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, [Redirect Only] then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. 2. Injectors

When I crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is failing and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially if they're an Bosch unit like ours. 5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your vehicle.
