It's no secret that telephones, specifically voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phones and internet protocol (IP) phones, are instrumental in enhancing industrial communication and, to a lesser extent, library use. These types of phones serve their purposes well, but require proper planning and selection to ensure seamless integration with existing equipment and infrastructure.

In industrial settings voice communication is crucial, it enables fast communication between workers and staff, and helps them give and receive important instructions and guidance in real-time as production runs. Choosing a telephone for these purposes means considering background noise in a given workspace. Telephone equipment suitable for use in noisy areas, comes in ruggedized cases, are often equipped with sound-absorbing mics that can boost the quality of voice interactions in these environments. Additionally, industrial phone units can often communicate and interface seamlessly with smart devices, increasing the potential use of portable devices in an industrial setting.

Industrial VoIP phones also have applications in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, used to monitor and control industrial processes within specific parameters, remotely. Using IP phone devices, critical data and information related to industrial equipment and processes is collected, stored, and conveyed wirelessly to production hubs for quick analysis.

In a library context, some may ask what telephones would be used for given the advent of always-present mobile devices. In some situations, industrial IP telephones can, upon request, fit a library setting, without an actual industrial intent for one they can either be placed in a board room for meetings or anywhere a long-distance communication is needed, given it can convey messages and updates much like a mobile Weather Resistant Phone, albeit having more features and capabilities and extended power.
