Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items are a common and important way to improve the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can cause additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is often superior to upgraded Common or Magic equipment because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be applied to armor and weapon items. They improve the stats of the item upgrade that they're attached to. Upgrades to armor are available in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged by using a professional or higher salvage kits to salvage upgrade components from items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it is able to absorb. The upgrade of an armor piece to maximum upgrade level will increase its ability to absorb damage. However, it's important be aware that this upgrade will increase its weight, causing it to weigh more than before.

There are several types of armor upgrades that are available in the game and they all have distinct effects. For instance, certain upgrades give the armor a certain amount of additional health points, while others make it stronger and lighter. The name of the armor upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade that an item upgrades will be given, as illustrated below.

The Jeweler is able to create the highest levels of gems with the exception of rare and legendary ones, which you must be at certain levels to gain. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out with a identical jewel without destroying the original one. However, you can only replace a jewel in an equipment piece once.

Utilizing more jewels in a move will make it more smooth and is usually performed for aesthetic reasons. In addition to improving performance, the jewels also create a surface that is harder than steel, so the repeated friction from pivots doesn't cause damage as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the appearance of your weapons and shields. These are a small perk and can be swapped out at any time however they aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. The first trinkets a player is able to unlock is the cloak, which grants a small, but valuable boost to speed of movement and evasion. The player will then be able to acquire necklaces, amulets, and rings in a similar manner similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that can accommodate either a universal upgrade or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be placed in any type of equipment, while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and only works with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets can also grant buffs and skills that are active when the hero is not in combat. This lets the hero perform better when they are not active and also helps to compensate for the absence of a solid team or any slots from the talent tree which would normally be filled with the hero's Best item upgrade statistics.

As a general rule trinket upgrades should be a priority BiS (Best in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace anytime soon. Then, you should consider any items that have desirable statistics are less significant than the iLevel of the item upgrader mod to be upgraded. This is especially true when an item has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade as it's often better to upgrade a single important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.
