Ford-New.pngCharles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite ohms.
