How to Replace an audi remote key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Porsche-New-2023.pngIn this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to the engine shutting down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are very cheap and easily accessible, especially if you're looking at an Bosch unit which is what ours are. Alternately, GM's version this part would be an option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi Tt replacement Key since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. If the sensor fails, it can disrupt the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

Mazda-3D-Black.pngThe G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU then processes this signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is the same across the replacement key audi 80-100-200-RS2 series, audi car key case (http://zhongneng.net.cn/home.php?mod=space&uid=361726) starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
