If you're having a flexible rhinoscopy, you'll probably just sit in a chair in our office. Your doctor will spray a local anesthetic into your nostrils to numb the nasal passages. The thin, flexible tube with the camera will then be gently inserted into one of your nostrils and advanced through your nasal passages. The camera sends live pictures to a screen, so we can see the inside of your nose, the wall in the middle, the structures that help with breathing, and the upper part of your throat behind your nose. You might be asked to breathe normally and refrain from swallowing if possible during the examination. This procedure typically takes about 5 to 10 minutes and is generally well-tolerated, though you might experience some pressure or a mild tickling sensation in your nose.

For a posterior rhinoscopy, you'll probably also be sitting up in a chair. Your doctor may spray a local anesthetic into your throat to help minimize any gag reflex. Next, the doctor will carefully put the small mirror into your mouth and angle it so they can see the back of your nose and the upper part of your throat behind your nose. You might be asked to breathe through your nose during the examination to aid visualization. This procedure also usually takes just a few minutes and might cause a brief sensation of gagging or discomfort.
